Mexican Ingenuity / Ingenio Mexicano

It's not my intention to generalize but, I think we Mexicans are experts in creating something from nothing and nothing gets in our way when we want to fix something that has been damaged. We don't need to have the right tool or all the materials, when we get an idea in our head no one can stop us!

Where  there is a will there is a way, they say - I believe it. I don't know how many times I saw my father make this saying a reality.  If he didn't have a hammer he used a stone. If he didn't have a screwdriver he used a knife. If he didn't have... well, you get the idea. I think I inherited my father's ingenuity. Once while spending a weekend in a cabin with my husband's family I was asked to prepare a hot sauce. After roasting the peppers and tomatoes we realized there was not a blender in the cabin much less a molcajete. I had to go find a rock, which I thoroughly washed and used to mash the tomatoes and peppers in a wooden bowl. Last November I had to use a stone to pound a turkey breast because I didn't have a mallet so I managed to pound my turkey with a small stone. I have spread cookie dough with a bottle of wine; I have used a glass to mash beans, and much of that sort. But which Mexican has not done that?

It has been several weeks since my oven broke. Even if I wanted, I wouldn't dare using my "Mexican ingenuity" to fix my oven. Things like gas and electricity are better left to the experts. I have improvised with some recipes commonly prepared in the oven but I made them on the stove top.

I won't write the recipes but I'll show you pictures. You will have to use your own ingenuity to prepare these meals.

Ingenio Mexicano

Saludos,

Mely

Oh my goodness Prieta! Tee Hee, you are a genius. I think it's great that you come up with the ideas you do. Your food looks delish!! Oh I wish I could express all this in the Spanish language like Mely did, but estoy muy Englese...lol. Heck I can read it, write it some and even speak it but not like I used to. Take care and have a great weekend. Looks delish.

Take care.

Gloria - I don't know about genius but resourceful yes, I am. I think it's great that you want to speak Spanish. If you know even a little you should try to use it. Spanish is a beautiful language. Thanks for you nice comments. Have a great long weekend (Monday is a holiday for me)!

Prieta,
Ahhh!!! I want to eat that pizza topped with onions, chard, chicken and smoked mozzarella! YUMMY. You'll have to post the recipe for the flatbread, please. I would love to cook with you someday soon!! Let's please get together. (Bea and I are going to attempt a Beef Bourgignon this coming Wednesday...yeesh!! Wish us good luck.) So, where do you get chanterelle mushrooms here in SD?

I loved your story about being resourceful in the kitchen. That happens sometimes, doesn't it? We always manage to figure it out. Loved your new post.

Yaya - Thanks for stopping by. Try finding chanterelle mushrooms in a Whole Foods Store.

Yoly - That pizza was sooo good! I'll share the recipe in another post. Wow, Beef Bourgignon! You two sure are ambitious; you'll do great. Don't forget to take pictures for Bea's new blog, I'll come to help her set it up. Let's email each other to come up with a cooking date. I get the chanterelle mushrooms at the Farmer's Market in Little Italy. Every Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00.

Un saludo!
